Singapore Ebikes – Can I Upgrade My Tyre Width?

The short answer is yes, approved Singapore ebikes from LTA does not have a requirement on tyre size but it’s not as simple as just slapping on a wider tyre. The first thing you need to consider is the clearance of your fork and rims. If you’re looking to upgrade from a 1.75″ tyre to a 2.5″ or 3″5mm” one, for instance, you’ll want to ensure that your fork has enough clearance to accommodate the new tyre size. The same goes for the rim width.

A wider tyre will require a wider rim to prevent any rubbing or interference with the brake calipers. Some LTA Approved for Singapore ebikes come with existing 3″ wide tyres like the Jimove MC Pro ebike, and Mobot Orca ebike. For these models the fork are already pre-installed to accomodate the wide tyres while slimmer forks like the Snapcycle Roadmaster ebike will not be able to fit.

At the Singapore ebike regulation level; the only restrictions that you should be aware of when it comes to usage of wider tyres are – will the overall nett weight of your electric bicycle exceed 20kg.

There are limited LTA approved Singapore ebike that comes with a 3″ wide tyres and why is this a common request in 2024? Using a bigger tyre than what came standard with your ebike is often associated with improved traction, comfort, and reduced rolling resistance.

However, there are some important considerations to keep in mind when upgrading to a larger tyre. Firstly, you’ll need to ensure that your ebike’s motor and controller can handle the increased weight and stress of the new tyre size – it is common to experience higher speed of drainage to your battery.

Secondly, you’ll want to check that your brakes are designed to work with the larger tyre size. Finally, you may also be looking at higher wear and tear rate with the increaqsed friction. Yes, you can! LTA Approved Singapore Ebike tyres all come with the standard rubber tyres in various sizes, width and types of treads. You may have came across honeycomb tyres or tubeless tyres. The complications of these tyres for Singapore ebike is that most of the Singapore ebikes are rear driven which means the motor is attached on the rear rims.
